Feature Comments a Problem in Kids Channel
posted by swampgirl 1 month 2 weeks ago • 380 views
My kids love it when I show them sifts. Occasionally I'll let them browse the Kids channel. Well it's been awhile.

The Featured Member Comment shouldn't be on the Kids Channel for obvious reasons

So.. is the only option to filter the feature comment off like I would NSFW? It would be nice if the channel itself was safe for kids w/o having set filters...

We should just have it parse and replace all of the colorful language with the words: puppy, snigglemuffin, puddlehuggins, kittenshnoogles, and butterfluggin

I just found out something disturbing, swampgirl's "children" are age 28 and 34...it's time to cut the cord, doll

a *quality idea swapgirl. I think it would be neat to create a Videsiftkids domain that is a VS specifically designed to be for kids. That way you could regulate ads that may direct to inappropriate content for children.

Awarding swampgirl with one star point for this contribution to Sift Talk - declared quality by gorgonheap.

That's a very good point, SG. I just made a change so the featured comment will only select comments from videos that are actually in the current channel, if any.

It's one step in the right direction by not displaying inappropriate videos in the featured comment box, though colorful language may still appear.

I added one more change to the featured comment. If you have your NSFW filter on, swear words will be masked, so something like "fucking cunt" would appear as "f&#@ing c@#*".

Do these two changes seem enough?

^That seems pretty good, lucky. If any sifters' kids ask what "f&#@ing c@#*" means, just tell them "feasting corpse". That will put their minds at ease.

Thankyou Lucky, thats a f&#@ing good step in the right direction

Thanks for the star point too, GH

And rottenseed: If you ask me, "butterfluggin" still sounds pretty suggestive.

Its a good point (raised before I think too) hehe, yeah, I think I think replacing swearing with smiley faces! Then no explaining to do. (although if anyone does try to explain anything away with "feasting corpse" I feel compelled to say "Nom Nom Nom Nom!")

Fudge Yeah!

That was a quick response and a nice change.

I would still prefer the featured comment was killed, but this was a nice change.

You're aware you can now disable it for yourself via the filter preferences in your account settings, yes?

No, I didn't know, Lucky, and thanks. But what bothers me about the featured comments is what guests see, not what I see. Just as an example of why I don't like it, I send sifts to my mother, to my coworkers, to my students. I don't like the ribbing, or worse, I get from them reading the comments that they see that they, not knowing how the sift works, think I sent them to purposefully.

Ah, I see. Hmm.

Well, what if it was labeled "Randomly Selected Comment of the Moment" instead of just "Featured Comment?" Would that make it a *little* better on people since they'll know at a glance it's just a randomly selected comment?

Don't forget avatars!! Some of them are not Mother Tested, Kid Approved.

By the way, I prefer word filters instead of ^$#$^#&#@

It can add humor and community to see "you mother butterchurn" instead of "you mother f&&#$^#er

HA Hilarious, JD. Then we could have a glossary/ dirty word translation page

That's a great idea, jd.

Done! Of course you'll have to turn your NSFW filter on to see it in action. I won't spill the beans about the magical translation. It's like the matrix: No one can be told what it is; you have to see it for yourself.

Ok, I just turned my filter on. I think it needs some tweeking, because I can still see some cursing. Lucky, add curse words in " " to your list might be the trick.

I'm testing... I'm not cursing at anyone ok?

[dirty words later edited out ]

hmmmm, nothing's different. Did I understand correctly that bad words are going to be filtered?

Oh, sorry if I was unclear, SG. The change I made was only for the featured comment.

If we were to filter *all* comments, I don't know if the NSFW filter would be the method to use. Rather, it may be best done with a member prefs setting or something because most people with NSFW enabled will probably not want all comments filtered.

I think this is a whole new topic we may need to discuss.
