Predators (Trailer)

Well you sold me.

interesting cast and director.

You mean Nimród Antal? The guy who made the forgettable 2007 thriller Vacancy? But I agree the cast does look good.

Anthony Weiner rips GOP for using fake document
>> ^RadHazG:
Any proof the document is fake? Aside from what seems to be silence on the other side and/or attempting to change the subject away from the memos source. Hard to hear with everyone talking over each other.

Proof that it's fake? Shouldn't proof that it's real be what's needed? Or should all pieces of paper be assumed to come from the democratic leadership until proven otherwise?

Legalizing Marijuana - Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura
MilkmanDan, it's good to hear a sensible opinion from someone who doesn't have a personal stake in the issue.

I'm a non-smoker too. And I'm for legalization. It seems marijuana is an inextensible part of our society. And I believe it can be enjoyed responsibly; without suffering permanent harm. Plus it really does seem to be a good treatment for certain conditions. Better to have it in the open and regulated than stuck forever in a massive black market institution.

But the hardcore supporters do get on my nerves sometimes. They have a tendency to go overboard, and in doing so damage their credibility. For example, when they claim that that smoking doesn't impair your driving. That, in a sense it improves your driving, because the slowed reaction time gives you more time to consider things.

Maddow- Why Daylight Saving Time?
Personally I think it's all daft. We have circadian rhythms that have been honed by nature over millions of years, and habits that most comfortably match it. We don't need Mr. Franklin coming along and telling us we're all idiots for not getting to sleep at 9PM and waking up at 5AM. Then creating a law to force us to sleep the way he does. If he were on a more sensibly denominated bill I would tear one up in rage.

And I suspect Ms. Maddow is truly confused. DST means you are forced to go to sleep earlier, and get up earlier. If you like staying up late, you're being screwed. I think what she likes is really just the longer days that come with summer. And somehow thinks that messing with the clocks is what causes that.

It's kind of obvious what direction they would go with, given the recent news. But the execution was good enough that it was still funny.

Police told to arrest innocent people to meet targets
I'm impressed he gathered some actual hard evidence. Anyone know what exactly they mean by "1 and 20", "25 and 1" and "35 and 1"? What is that a ratio of?

True Blood Opening Credits
Not my favorite part of the show, but it does neatly sum up what you can expect:

Sex

Religion

Death

Vampires

The Swampy South

Zero Punctuation: Bioshock 2
I'm surprised that Yahtzee didn't mention that, shortly after the sales figures of the first game came in (huge success), the publisher (2k) immediately took the franchise away from it's creators (Irrational Games) and gave it to a different developer (2K Marin) to knock off a hasty sequel. He notices who the developers are when it comes to Silent Hill games, why not now?

Speaking in general that's a trend that really bothers me among the gaming press. Publishers want to push the idea that the developers don't really matter and are interchangeable, and everyone should just refer to games as being from the publisher. And somehow the gaming press has signed on.

Think about it, have you ever read a book review where the author is never mentioned but they just say it's by Penguin books? Or ever been got caught up in the hype about that new album everyone wants "Rock Music" by Sony Music? (after all musicians are a dime a dozen)

But I'm just venting about that. Otherwise all his points were spot on. I don't think Bioshock 2 is badly made, it's pretty well made, I just think it's soulless. And a disappointment compared to the true sequel that Irrational could have delivered a few years from now.

TDS: Senate After Dark
A few points since we've started debating the fundamentals of unemployment.

1. Unemployment taxes are only payed by employers

2. In order to claim unemployment benefits the worker must be unemployed through no fault of his own (generally through lay-offs)

3. Unemployment benefits are paid by the employer on a per-case basis. Meaning if an employer lays off less people, they will pay less. They are also based on a percent of the employee's previous wage.

4. In general anyone who has not had their job long, or who had a part time job, is not eligible for unemployment benefits. Even if it was lost through no fault of their own. source

5. The result of the above is that the poor, who are far more likely to have seasonal or part time work, are often ineligible for unemployment.

If you think that unemployment insurance should be eliminated entirely, you're arguing that a safety net that protects most Americans should be be eliminated because it's costly for the businesses employ them. I can only guess you're extremely trusting of your employer and think they will never lay you off. In which case I'd remind you they're not paying anything for not laying you off. Or you may think your employer only lays off people who deserve it. In which case I'd remind you that people who deserve it can simply be fired. That is what being fired means, that the employee deserved to lose their job, and people who were justly fired are not eligible for unemployment.

Howard Stern destroys Jay Leno LIVE on the CBS Morning Show
Jay Leno was fired by NBC?

Back in 2004 Jay Leno renewed his contract with NBC for an additional 5 years. A few months later it was announced that Jay had decided to retire at the end of his contract and that Conan would be taking over the Tonight Show.

I guess Howard is suggesting that Jay was really fired back in 2004. But if NBC wanted him gone back in 2004, why would they have renewed his contract for 5 YEARS? And why would they force out Jay, who had great ratings, in favor of Conan, who had a fraction of the audience? The official story seems more likely, that Jay thought at the time that he'd want to retire in 5 years. Hell maybe NBC wanted a 10 year contract and Jay just wasn't willing to commit.

I guess it's possible to imagine some scenario where Jay Leno was both renewed for 5 years and forced out at the same time. But unless there's a good reason to think that it doesn't seem likely.

Of course all of Howard's points about Jay being an ass and unfunny are right on.
